CMS Support and Availability

LightCMS recently announced that the platform will be terminated on 31 October 2020, along with all of the sites it hosts. This essentially means that everyone utilizing it will have to migrate to a new platform and content management system (CMS) that offers excellent technical support and won’t reach its termination date anytime soon. There has never been a better time to migrate from LightCMS to WordPress.

Both WordPress and LightCMS have played a big role in the support and management of websites over the last decade and have proven themselves to be superb platforms. Migrating from one system to another is often not readily considered unless the move will considerably improve the overall performance and management of your website. However, LightCMS users have no option but consider an alternative now, and quickly.

WordPress currently has over 60.4% in market share value and is powering 33.5% of all online websites. As it is so widely supported, there is little chance of the platform sun setting in the foreseeable future.

Excellent technical support and online community forums also make this platform effortless to navigate. Seeing as WordPress is open source and constantly being updated and modified, new versions of the software are easy to come by and won’t ever require you to migrate your entire website.

Price

Although the price of LightCMS is not going to matter after May 2020, it will be comforting to know that WordPress offers an affordable service you can rely on. While a free trial version of the former allowed you to investigate the features and maybe even design and build a mock web page, the use of the platform was not free. If you were starting small, an entry-level account cost $19 monthly. This allowed you to create up to ten webpages. For $99 per month, you could create an unlimited number of pages on your website.

On the other hand, WordPress is open source. This means that the software doesn’t belong to any one person or company and can, therefore, be downloaded and installed completely free of charge. The only real expenses that come with creating a WordPress website is the monthly hosting costs, which normally amounts to $7.99, and the annual domain name fee which usually adds up to around $14. From there, you have access to a vast library of free and paid themes and plug-ins. Unless you want something specific, you may be able to get away with using free add-ons.

If you are starting out small and want to test the waters before making any major investments, then WordPress will be the best platform and CMS to host your website. Compared to LightCMS’s most affordable subscription option, WordPress still manages to offer more for less.

Features

As the name suggests, LightCMS was a very simple content management platform that specialized in ‘light’ support. Compared to other platforms, this system did not offer a ton of features and was mainly used to manage content and create new web pages. Although LightCMS allowed users to add custom elements to webpages, its editing manageability was limited to drag and drop functionality, which also hindered custom web layouts.

The lack of features and layout options made LightCMS best for putting together very simple sites. Additionally, this platform was also better suited to web designers who were solely focused on webpage creation and did not necessarily fit the needs of a global enterprise. Furthermore, LiteCMS did not support iPhone or Android devices.

However, when it comes to WordPress, you have access to advanced features that enable you to effortlessly manage your eCommerce, social networking, blogging, and multimedia. WordPress offers easy integration and can host your website both on mobile and desktop devices. For companies that need absolute control over advanced features and software integration, WordPress is probably the best route.

Open-source vs Commercial Software

LightCMS was a web-based software platform, sold as commercial software and often used to build websites like online stores. Although commercial software offers a bit more security when it comes to the protected nature of the platform’s coding, it also has a lot of downsides. Firstly, the software was created by only a handful of developers, which means that it might not be able to match the quality of an open-source platform.

Furthermore, big companies are known to take open-source software coding and tweak it to fit their specific website needs. With LightCMS, this was not possible as their commercially sold software coding was not freely available to the public.

However, seeing as WordPress is open-source, all of the above-mentioned benefits apply to its users. Open-source software is also much better at adhering to open standards compared to proprietary software. Businesses that value interoperability with other businesses and don’t like the idea of being limited by proprietary data formats will also prefer WordPress over LightCMS.

READY TO MIGRATE?

There is no question WordPress is a better solution to online content management than Joomla. Not only is it incredibly cheap in general, it uses a dynamic pricing plan so that users are only paying for the functionality used on their site, which ensures no money is wasted on unnecessary features. WordPress offers its users more freedom and flexibility than any of its alternatives, and it is a stable platform that is reliable for hosting professional, complex sites. With all the benefits WordPress has to offer its users, it’s obvious why approximately 75 million live sites are using the platform.

Migration of your current Joomla site to WordPress is made easy through WordHerd’s migration services. Transitions are made seamlessly through the use of proprietary migration tools and years of experience migrating thousands of sites. We invite you to review our portfolio of previous websites and read the testimonials of some of our satisfied customers.

Your website is the centerpiece of your company and transitioning to a reliable, sustainable, and cost-effective content management system with a wide range of functionality is critical. Through WordHerd’s services you can keep the look and functionality of your current site and enjoy the convenience and the benefits WordPress has to offer.
